contemplate-ing

while waiting for the next big inspiration to strike i started work on something i've meant to have a go at for a while .......

i used to have a lovely little 1950s tea plate, picked up in a charity shop, but it got dropped and broken - i kept the pieces, in the hope that i might find a way to do a japanese style repair and, at least, be able to display it - then i thought about basing a stitch project on it - so i combined the two ideas and i am stitching a copy ....... to which i will add a stitched break and repairs

i found some lovely fine linen which mum had passed on to me - the first stitching was in fine silk and it was such a pleasure i didn't want to stop, so i got the feathery outlines done much more quickly than anticipated

in fact the whole thing has been so enjoyable that i have made much speedier progress than i expected - having a design to follow has relieved me of so many choices, leaving me with just the stitch types and colour of thread

the original plate had black for both the feathery and floral outlines - black or dark grey stitching felt to harsh so i chose a variegated autumn leaf silk for the feathery bits and a dark green for the floral outline

the outer edge is a broken scallop which echoes the shape of the plate, once these are done i start on the break lines - i suppose i could call it a patchwork!?
