already i am learning - it is explained with such simplicity that it leaves me wondering why i hadn't realised earlier

which is meant to be white and black - but the automatic exposure setting adjusts it
this explains why i feel some of my shots seem bleached out or a bit dark - the thing is that i have had this explained before, sort of, but my problem is understanding how to adjust my camera settings in the right way - hopefully this will come next
in the meantime a short trip to north kent yielded some interesting shots as well as an enjoyable visit - the heritage docks at Chatham were far more interesting than i would have guessed - we had a tour through a submarine which had seen duty as a surveillance sub and the ropery visit was also an eye opener - the guide was "in character" as a seaman's widow who worked in the ropery just before full mechanisation of the process and the introduction of iron-clad ships made a large proportion of the workers redundant
visually, the best bit was the timber roof structure of the old dry-dock building
