weaving stories

today i heard this:
stories explain who we are and where we came from
stories are not facts but inventions woven around facts

so the weft is the invention being wound around the warp of fact, embellishing and holding it together

as we re-tell the stories the original facts become clouded and the myth develops,
so while the essentials are still present it becomes hard to distinguish them,
the whole emphasis shifts as the invention is elaborated

now the decorative weft is the main thing we see and it is hard to identify the warp without pulling the whole thing apart, then it no longer holds together - and with time the warp and weft have worn, faded, frayed and decayed
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

this made me think about the stories in a family - they start with the same warp of true events but we each weave our own weft of  feelings and interpretation, to our own pattern - even if we all use the same yarn the result is different - but we carry it with us as the true story - when we compare stories they are all beautiful and complex but very different ....who's is the truth?

i'm confused and struggling with family issues at the moment - this helps a little
