meaning to stitch 3
Ruth's latest post speaks of protecting items with wrapping, it made me think of the way i have used it in the past as it has not been consciously protective
i suppose my main uses of wrapping are :
coins wrapped in copper mesh, held down with stitch |
decorative - to add another layer of texture or visual interest through wrapping with thread, stitch or cloth
functional - tree-wrapping for ecodye, making wrap-cloths,
to bind or attach different elements
i have rarely given meaning to the act of wrapping, although in this piece (a memorial cloth for my father) all the wire and artefacts were used or collected by my father.....
......and for Earthbound (made for an exhibition titled "From The Earth")- i wrapped a branch in ecodyed, reclaimed fabric strips (this photo is a bit fuzzy but it's more to remind me of the piece than to show the detail) - the wrapping was a way of embellishing the branch with something made sustainably - echoing the cycle of life, all the ingredients being natural and compostable to support future growth
so it's a technique i am familiar with but had not really come round to using in a meaningful way - time to start wrapping meaning into my work i think
