meaning to stitch 15

two years after the first stitch i have finally stitched the last initials of the slaves i identified as belonging to my ancestors

although it may not look that way, each initial has been stitched with care and thought - i can never know what all those people experienced during their time as slaves to my ancestors, nor can i ever make amends for the way they were used and abused - all i can do is mark their existence and acknowledge the role they unknowingly played,  in making my life possible

The image shows one of the memorial sculptures from the International Slave Route Memorial at Le Morne. Opened in 2009 it is one of the ways in which Mauritius is acknowledging its role in the slave trade.
